25-MINUTE TALK

Your process is a product, and the users are your colleagues

“Designers should do strategy” is the new “design should have a seat at the table.” But there’s no shortcut to making someone else let us do it.

The work of gathering the necessary influence for leverage over decisions looks the same from a designer’s chair as it does from a product manager’s. And design has fallen behind in that race.

We need to re-learn how to show up as equals, and reframe design’s relationship with the value delivery process—using the tools and methods of design as a unique advantage, rather than treating them as an obstacle.
